Quarterly Update of BC Liquor Market Review Data

BC Liquor Distribution Board has released its Liquor Market Review for quarter ended March 31, 2025 and I have added the data to my on-going BC Liquor Market Review dashboard.

I will be delving into the data in the coming days to see what may be worth sharing. An obvious question that I’m sure is on a lot of Canadians’ minds: what is the story related to US beverages and intentions of British Columbians to reduce purchases of US products?

More on this to come, but for now…

A Quick Look at US Beverage Sales in BC

BC liquor sales are not cleanly broken out by country of origin for all categories, but we can get a sense by looking at these categories:

  • USA Beer
  • American Whiskey
  • Bourbon Whiskey
  • USA Red Wine
  • USA White Wine

At first glance, there does seem to be a drop-off that has been going for a while, but maybe accelerating:

Drilling into the categories, it looks like red wine is the major driver of the sales decline.

Lots more to dig into here…

  • how does this compare to overall trends?
  • are there some countries or categories that appear to be benefiting from anti-US sentiment?
  • we can see the volume but what about % changes?

…more to come!
